This rare photograph shows Vesuvius erupting circa 1920. Though within a stones throw of Naples and surrounded by urban housing areas this supposedly dormant 4,000 feet high Volcano last erupted in 1944 and is overdue for another.
On 24th August 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted and in the process it buried the Roman cities of Pompeii, Stabiae, and Herculaneum in a sea of volcanic ash and pumice stone.
Although lava from the eruption flowed away down the west side of Mount Vesuvius the pumice raining down was so extensive that populations to the south and south-east could only escape into the Tyrrhenian Sea and soon all available boats were full and means of escape denied. The population of Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum took refuge in houses, temples and buildings as the pumice stones grew larger and threatened to fall from the sky to kill anyone who ventured out.
As the streets filled with the hot Ash and pumice, roof structures began to strain and one can only imagine the terror of the people left behind as their lungs were burned from the sulphurated air. In many instances the roofs gave way and crushed the occupants beneath.
When the eruption had ceased up to thirty feet of pumice and ash had submerged those ancient Roman cities and in the course of time the powder annealed to form a solid band of volcanic detritus.
The archeological uncovering of the area began by accident in 1709 when workmen digging a well at Herculaneum unearthed an ancient Roman theatre (theater). Soon the area was being robbed of its treasures by anyone with a spade. The beautiful Roman artefacts were still waiting there in each house just as the occupants had left them sixteen hundred years before.
As each house and building was painstakingly unearthed the archaeologists began to break into strange shaped voids in the hardened volcanic ash which they realised to their horror were the spaces left following the decomposition of human victims after they had been suffocated in their death-throes by the inexorable build up of ash. By injecting plaster into these voids and then clearing the volcanic detritus after the plaster had set an exact replica of the position and posture of these ancient Romans was created. These 'statutes' can be seen on display in Pompeii today in their original positions in their rebuilt homes.
Some discoveries were heart-rending involving 'tableaux' of whole families, huddled together in the corner of their houses where mothers had covered their children with their own bodies to try to protect them to the last. A true indictment of the care and committedness of the citizens of Pompeii and a touch of true humanity which has spanned the ages.
These 'submerged' cities are unbelievably extensive (see photo reproduced below of just one avenue) and are treasure-troves of Roman art and civilisation as well as first hand evidence of the latent uncontrollable forces of Nature which we still live with. These monumental tragedies are a reminder of the awesome power of nature. Yet another indication of just how misguided claims of Global Warming today really are.
The Romans hailed Vulcan as one of the most powerful ancient gods. The egregore of Vulcan was a development of the age-old Etruscan god Sethlans. It was Vulcan's power which created and controlled the elemental eruptions given his name (volcanos) which were an ever present threat in Southern Italy.
The ring of volcanoes there include the famous Stromboli and Etna both of which have also erupted within living memory.
Vulcan was said to have taught humankind about metalurgy as he made rocks molten and showed the way for the early smiths. Vulcan therefore was the mediterranean counterpart to the northmen's Thor. However, Vulcan had a stronger association with fires' destructive capacity, and a major concern of his worshippers was to encourage the god to avert harmful fires.
Vulcan's festival The Volcanalia was held every year on August 23rd. Ironically, the day before Vesuvius awoke and destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD...
When a young man Marabas made a pilgrimage to Vesuvius. He spent the previous days in Rome, further up the coast and spent his last night in the Italian capitol sleeping rough under the Collonade which rings the Vaticans' St Peter's Square.
As he lay there, watching the nuns to his right, mumbling their prayers as they crossed the plaza he also heard the Putanescas (prostitutes) to the left, plying for trade in their time-honoured place on the banks of the Tiber. It seemed to him to epitomise the idiosyncrasies of Italy, where the Moon Goddess of the etruscans became transmuted into the Madonna of Catholicism.
Next day Marabas worked his way down the coast road to San Vito and reached the foot of Vesuvius at twilight. He began the ascent on foot and in the dark with a heavy pack, arriving at the lip of the crater after midnight. He stepped into the rim of the great crater (no mean feat as the ground was treacherously loose underfoot) and obtained a lump of larva cinder.
Settling himself in for a fitful rest he prepared himself for the rising of the sun. As the first rays broke over the curvature of the earth and the great purple bulk of the shadow of Vesuvius spread across the Bay of Naples he stood at the edge of the crater in the chill air, completely alone.
Facing east he began the Invocation to Vulcan at the top of his voice. After the rite Marabas tidied everything up, put the newly charged Obeah Stone in his pack and made his way down the track to civilisation. That expedition occurred over 40 years ago and the cinder has had its place in a niche in Marabas's Altar ever since.
